Retail Major Amazon plans to lay off around 9,000 individuals in its second round of layoffs. A majority of the job cuts at Amazon will be in departments such as AWS (Amazon Web Services), People, Experience, and Technology (PXT), Advertising, and Twitch, according to a memo sent by CEO Andy Jassy to employees.
Jassy stated that while this was a difficult decision, it was necessary for the long-term success of the company.
The second round of firing comes at a time amid several layoff rounds in tech companies. Last week, Meta too announced that it was cutting 10,000 more jobs.
Amazon's decision comes just two months after the company had announced it was laying off 18,000 employees.
In November 2022, Jassy had first said that a number of positions across the Devices and Books businesses, and gave a voluntary reduction offer to some in the PXT, and had said more would be expected in 2023.
In the memo to employees on March 20, Jassy said the reason the newly announced role reductions weren't clubbed with the previous announcement was that not all teams were done with their analyses at the time.
He said that the company will provide support for employees who are being laid off, including a "separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support."
Jassy said that for several years, most of the company's business have added a significant number of people, which made sense at the time because of the business as well as the economy at large.
