SAP Labs, the research and development business unit of German tech firm SAP, has fired nearly 300 executives across its India centers.
The layoffs mainly impacted Bengaluru and Gurgaon campuses. The affected employees, including some with 10-15 years of experience, have been offered severance packages of salaries equating to the number of years they served at the firm.
The layoffs were a result of shuttering of a global delivery center that housed custom development roles to undertake SAP implementation projects, according to sources close to the matter.
However, SAP Labs declined to give out an India-specific breakup on the layoff.
The layoffs are a strategic transformation started two years ago, and it has deepened its focus on delivering value to current, and new clients in the cloud and on high-growth opportunities as part of an organizational re-prioritization said a company spokesperson.
Last month, SAP announced layoffs to focus on its 'core business' globally, affecting more than 3000 roles. It declared the firings right after the company reported a 30% revenue increase in its cloud business in the 4th quarter that ended December 2022.
Last year, SAP Labs said it would double its India employees headcount by 2025 and open a new campus in Devenhalli, Bengaluru, with a capacity of 15000 employees. Moreover, it acquired 41 acres of land in the area which is strategically placed close to its global clients in the city.
